Five Time Winners of the US Open

As chief executive officer and owner of Dorkan Financial Group, Inc., Murat Dorkan spent 14 years as a professional coach and business and financial consultant serving clients in the Owings Mills, Maryland, region. In his leisure time, Murat Dorkan enjoys staying active by playing tennis at the Barehills Racquet Club in Baltimore and is a fan of the US Open.

Since 1968, when both professional and amateur players were welcomed at the event, a trio of men have managed to win five US Open championships. American Jimmy Connors was the first man to accomplish the feat, taking the 1974 US Open as one of three major tournaments won that year. Over the next four years he would bring his consecutive US Open finals streak to five, winning again in 1976 and 1978. After three successive semifinal exits, Connors reclaimed his US Open crown in 1982 and defended it in 1983.

Pete Sampras became the second man and second American player to win five US Open events. Sampras won the first of his 14 grand slam titles at the 1990 US Open. Between 1993 and 1996 he won three additional titles. Sampras would claim his fifth US Open title in 2002 over rival Andre Agassi following back-to-back defeats in the finals. Sampras announced his retirement from tennis a year later, making the 2002 US Open victory his final tournament.

More recently, Roger Federer of Switzerland joined Connors and Sampras with five US Open wins. Unlike the two Americans, Federer won his five titles between 2004 and 2008. He made a sixth straight appearance in a US Open final in 2009, but was defeated in five sets. He then contested five successive US Open events without a finals appearance before making a return, albeit a losing one, in 2015.
